Amaka

Amaka is a senior at Saint Francis High School  in Mountain View.  She has maintained a 4.1 weighted GPA while taking 8 AP courses, 2 honors courses and 5 accelerated courses.  She is a President of the San Jose/NAACP Youth Council, President of the National Honor Society, and  active in varsity track and field just to name a few of her extra-curricular activities.   Amaka is committed to social issues and civil rights and has been a school representative and spokeswoman at the Mayor’s Diversity Youth Form and the Legislative Black Caucus Mock Legislature.  She also has strong commitment to her Nigerian roots and has been a member of the Ezinwanne Cultural dance Troupe and is an active member of the Eynima Cultural group.

Amaka is an aspiring physician and will attend Harvard in the fall.

One of Amaka’s recommendation letters came from her Advisor on the NAACP Youth Council and gives great insight into her character - and I read:

·         “In addition to her role on the executive committee, Amaka has attended the Annual San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP Youth Leadership Conference, as one of only 43 students to be accepted into the program. When she was selected for the program for the second time this year, she opted to attend as Junior Counselor to play mentor to many of the early high school participants.  At this conference a scheduled speaker was unable to attend at the last moment; Amaka volunteered to do the presentation and worked between scheduled seminars and during breaks to prepare for a presentation later that day.  The session, on stereotypes and prejudice, was executed amazingly well, especially given the circumstance in which she was called upon to perform.”

Amaka’s outstanding academic and civic record is clearly recognized by more than the PBWC .  She has been accepted by the following institutions:  Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, John Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, UC Davis and Carnegie Mellon just to name a few.  Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Amaka.
